Bangsa Sug Consensus Pushes for ZAMBASULTA Federal State

Garden Orchid Hotel- ZAMBOANGA CITY. May 9, 2018. Supporters of Abdusakur Tan, former Governor of Sulu flocked to Garden Orchid Hotel in Zamboanga City to express declaration of support for Bangsa Sug Consensus, “A people of significance.” Those attendees came from Tawi-Tawi, Sulu, Basilan and Zamboanga-Sibugay province. 

The Bangsa Sug Consensus is a political movement spearheaded by Tan with accorded royal title as “Datu Shabandar” granted by five Sulu aspiring Sultans that was formed by the Sulu Royal Council.

The Movement proposes the formation of Zamboanga, Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi (ZAMBASULTA) as one Federal State under the proposed Presidential Federal form of Government. The said movement seeks exclusion from the proposed Bangsamoro Government. 

In his opening speech, Tan expressed categorically the the Bangsa Sug Consensus is not against the Bangsamoro Bill but at the same breath, he reiterated his consistent stand against automatic inclusion of ARMM into Bangsamoro. 

Tan read before 500 supporters the contents of the Bangsa Sug Consensus position paper on the proposed Bangsamoro Bill and Federalism. 

The position paper is divided into: 1. Reaction to the proposed Bangsamoro Bill, and 2. Proposal on the territory for Federal State in the island provinces of Sulu, Tawi-Tawi and Basilan. The commonality is they are both concerned with provisions to be advanced later. 

In reaction to the proposed Bangsamoro Bill under Article III of both versions of BTC Draft BBL, Tan position paper objects and wants clearer statements on Sulu Sea issue to retain its name and the ARMM provinces should be given an option to vote against its inclusion to the new Bangsamoro entity. 

In the same proposal on the territory, the proposed Federal State comprising the island provinces of Sulu, Tawi-Tawi and Basilan that Zamboanga Del Sur, Norte, Sibugay and the City of Zamboanga should be integrated as one Federal State. 

Tan justified the inclusion of those province and cities based on geographical proximity and demographic, historical reality as well as cultural identity among others. 

Among those who aired their support in the form of written declaration are The Royal Sultanate Council of the Sultanate of Sulu, Sultan Sibugay and Maguindanao represented by Jamil Maulana. 

Those present in the event were from Ulama Council and different sector representatives from Sulu, Basilan, Tawi-Tawi, Zamboanga Sibugay and Zamboanga City.

Tan expressed a gesture of elation and gratitude to the supporters on their presence on the five -hour momentous event.
