Malacañang welcomes BOL ratification, urges Moro people to support leaders

Malacañang welcomed the momentous ratification of Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL), a charter which creates the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), and urged the people of the region to give their support.

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in a statement on Saturday, “We urge the people in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao to give their new leaders their support and cooperation but at the same time we implore them to be vigilant and assertive of their rights.”

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) en banc on Friday announced that more than 1.5 million residents of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao voted "yes" to the ratification of the BOL in the plebiscite held last January 21.

“The sovereign voice of the participating voters in the just concluded plebiscite has spoken, ushering a ray of hope to that war weary, poverty stricken, long neglected and much heralded promised land of the fifties,” the Palace official said.

The BARMM will be in place once President Duterte constitutes the 80-member Bangsamoro Transition Authority that will oversee its interim government, according to Panelo.

He said the President is hopeful that the ratification of the BOL will start the process of correcting the historical injustices committed against the Bangsamoro people.

As provided in the BOL, the President shall appoint 80-members of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority that will oversee the interim government.

The Palace official also called on the would-be leaders of the Bangsamoro region “to be fealty to their oaths of office”.

“The quest to lasting peace in that region saw not only the bloody encounters among the Muslim combatants but spawned more conflicts as well, giving birth to more armed groups and violent hostilities to the sufferance of the Bangsamoro people and the Christian inhabitants,” the Presidential spokesperson added.
