Bangsamoro Qari is declared champion during the 9th Southeast Asian Youth International Qur'an Reading Competition in Brunei Darussalam

COTABATO CITY – A Bangsamoro Qari Kamaruddin Guinda Zaidon of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) has been declared as Champion of the competition on the 9th Southeast Asian Youth International Qur'an Reading Competition 2019 held at the Brunei International Convention Center (BICC) on December 3-5, 2019.

Dr Bai Cabayan D. Bacar, Board Chairwoman of the Holy Qur’an Affairs Organization of the Philippines (HQAOP) said in an interview that “Kamaruddin Guinda Zaidon of Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao brought honor and pride to Bangsamoro, and the Philippines when he was declared Champion by the 15 Member Panel of Judges (Hukkam) during the Qur'an reading competition.”

The trophy was awarded to Qari (Qur’an reader/reciter) Zaidon, with Certificate of Recognition, and a cash 5000 Brunei dollar by the organizers. 

“The event held every two years,” Bacar disclosed that. “Zaidon has competed the previous competition, however he failed to win because of some technical error as the microphone was far from his mouth, and his voice was not heard well” 

Al Qari Zaidon, 27 years old has been competing in the Bangsamoro Region and became champion in a Qur’an Reading Competition sponsored by the defunct ARMM that led him to compete internationally, and got his first title award during the event in Brunei Darussalam participated in by 10 Muslim countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei, Thailand, Lao, Cambodia, Myanmar, Timor Leste, and the Philippines.

“Qari Zaidon is the best student and become mentor of the renowned International Champion Bangsamoro Qari Numan Pimbayabaya,” said Bacar.

Bacar stressed that even long before the establishment of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), Bangsamoro Qari Zaidon also won in an international reading competition. 

“How much more right now that we have our own government,” she said. Bacar is hopeful that BARMM Government will help the Qaris improves their ability in reading the Qur’an and support their endeavor.

The 1969 Malaysia Qur’an Reading Competition held in Kuala Lumpur, Ustadz Abdulnasser Hasim was declared Champion. He is the President of HQAOP with 11 chapters in the country. 

HQAOP is inviting all Bangsamoro Muslims who may want to develop their skills on Qur’an reading.

This year only, Al Qari Mohammad Nadhir Asgar Jr. of Lanao del Sur won the championship in the male category of the world Qur’an reading completion held in Doha, Qatar on April 7-12. 

Qari Asgar, an internally displaced person (IDP) from conflict affected-area of Marawi City, bested 100 finalists among 2,700 competitors that auditioned for the tilt from 50 participating countries.
