LGU-Gensan, NCMF Establish Halal Consumers Association

The Local Government Unit of General Santos City (LGU-Gensan), through the City Mayor’s Office Integrated Cultural Communities Affairs Division (CMO-ICCAD), in collaboration with the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) General Santos Provincial Office established the General Santos City Halal Consumers Association (GSCHCA) on September 26, 2024.
This newly formed association will serve as a vital voice for the city’s Muslim community regarding Halal concerns. Muslim consumers have faced significant challenges, including cross-contamination of beef with non-Halal products in communal slaughterhouse and the deceptive practice of some fish vendors who coat sliced fish with swine blood to enhance its appearance.

Sheikh Abdulfatah Zacaria, a Muslim scholar and former director of the Gensan Madaris Academy, has been elected as the chairman of the GSCHCA. The group has agreed to establish a Board of Directors that will represent various sectors of the Muslim community, including Imams, educators, women, youth, professionals, and members of different Moro tribes.

CMO-ICCAD, the office of LGU-Gensan dedicated to serving Muslim constituents, is also spearheading a Halal Industry Development Project. This initiative aims to create and implement a comprehensive plan to advance the Halal industry in General Santos City.
Organizers expressed hope that the new association will collaborate with LGU Gensan, the NCMF, and other concerned agencies to actively monitor Halal practices and support the development of the local Halal industry.

The GSCHCA officers plan to convene for follow-up meetings to discuss upcoming activities and initiatives.
