Bangsamoro Lawmaker Commends President Marcos for Signing Islamic Burial Act

The new law ensures timely and dignified burials for deceased Muslims in accordance with Islamic rites—an important recognition of religious and cultural practices long challenged by limited access to Muslim cemeteries. RA 12160 affirms the right of Muslim Filipinos to observe their faith even in life’s most solemn moments, reflecting the government's broader commitment to religious inclusivity.
“This is not just a law—it is a recognition of our identity, our culture, and our faith,” Benito said, visibly moved as he addressed the plenary. “Through this Act, the government has shown its respect for the traditions of the Muslim Filipino community, especially in the most sacred and sensitive moments of life—our farewell to the departed.”
“In Islam, it is a sacred obligation to bury the dead within twenty-four hours,” the lawmaker underscored.
Benito lauded President Marcos for demonstrating political will and cultural sensitivity, calling the move a reflection of responsive and inclusive leadership.
He also acknowledged the joint efforts of fellow lawmakers, Muslim leaders, and advocates who worked to bring the bill into law.
RA 12160 ensures that the remains of Muslims are released from hospitals within 24 hours, regardless of whether associated costs have been settled, to adhere to Islamic burial customs.
