Bangsamoro Chief Minister Macacua Backs MILF Call for 2025 Bangsamoro Elections

Bangsamoro Chief Minister Abduraof A. Macacua has expressed full support for the call of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) to push through with the scheduled parliamentary elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) on October 13, 2025.

In an official statement released Friday June 6, 2025, Macacua aligned himself with MILF Chairman Al Haj Murad Ebrahim and the MILF Central Committee in urging national leaders and stakeholders to uphold the election timeline mandated under Republic Act No. 12123.

“The conduct of these elections is integral to ensuring that the voices of the Bangsamoro people are heard and that their choices shape the future of our region,” Macacua said. He emphasized that the upcoming polls will mark the formal end of the transition period and reinforce democratic governance in the region.

MILF Vice Chairman Mohagher Iqbal earlier made a strong appeal to the national government, Congress, the Commission on Elections, and other stakeholders not to entertain any proposal to postpone the elections again. Iqbal noted that the polls had already been deferred twice—first in 2021 and again in early 2025.

While no legislation has been filed to delay the elections further, the MILF has raised concerns over renewed discussions to move the polls to 2028. Iqbal warned that further delays could jeopardize the peace process.

“Peace in the Bangsamoro is precious but fragile. Let us not waste the gains we have made,” Iqbal said.

Macacua ended his statement saying, “Together, we shall build a brighter tomorrow founded on the principles of Islam, democracy, and justice.”

The 2025 parliamentary elections will be the first regular electoral exercise in BARMM since its creation in 2019, allowing residents to elect their representatives to a fully functioning regional government.

Republic Act No. 12123, signed into law on February 19, 2025, resets the first regular elections in BARMM to October 13, 2025. The law amends Section 13, Article XVI of Republic Act No. 11054, known as the "Organic Law for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao." Under this law, future elections in BARMM will be synchronized with national elections and held every three years thereafter, with the next scheduled for 2028.
