COTABATO CITY — Malacañang has declared Wednesday, May 27, 2026 a regular holiday throughout the Philippines in observance of Eid'l Adha — the Feast of Sacrifice — through Presidential Proclamation No. 1264, signed on May 21, 2026.
The proclamation was issued pursuant to Republic Act No. 9849, which enshrines Eid'l Adha as a national holiday observed on the 10th day of Zhul Hijja, the twelfth and final month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) recommended the date following its official determination of the corresponding day in the Hijri calendar.
The Meaning of Eid'l Adha
Eid'l Adha commemorates one of the most profound acts of faith in the Abrahamic tradition — the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim, peace be upon him, to offer his son, Ismail, in complete submission to the command of Allah, before divine mercy intervened and a ram was provided in the son's place. The occasion is an annual reminder of the virtues that lie at the heart of Islamic life: tawakkul — trust in Allah — alongside obedience, sacrifice, compassion, and generosity.
Across the Bangsamoro and the broader Muslim Filipino community, the day begins with early morning congregational prayers — Salat al-Eid — held in mosques, open grounds, and designated prayer areas. Families and communities then observe the qurbani, the ritual slaughter of livestock, with the meat customarily divided into three portions: one for the family, one for relatives and neighbors, and one for the poor and those in need.
The feast is also a time of reflection, charity, and the strengthening of communal bonds — values that resonate with particular depth in the Bangsamoro, where the spirit of collective care has long sustained communities through hardship.
Coinciding with the Hajj,
Eid'l Adha carries added spiritual weight as it falls at the culmination of the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Makkah — the fifth pillar of Islam and one of the largest gatherings of humanity on earth. For Muslim Filipinos with relatives performing the Hajj this year, the holiday is a moment of shared devotion that transcends borders.
