Comelec places 27 BARMM areas under ‘red category’

In an interview with reporters, Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia explained that a red category classification indicates serious threats posed by rebel groups and other armed threat factions.
?“The 27 areas were classified solely because of their history of election-related violence in previous elections, but there are no current incidents linked to them. That is what we are monitoring right now,” Garcia said.
?Garcia added that another 27 areas have been categorized as "orange," signaling potential election-related disturbances.
?He clarified, however, that these classified areas—which remain unspecified for security reasons—will undergo weekly monitoring and potential reclassification in the lead-up to the September 14 polls.
?The parliamentary elections follow the enactment of Republic Act No. 12317, signed into law by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on March 25, 2026, which reset the inaugural BARMM regular elections to September 2026.
?The law, championed in the Senate by then Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel "Migz" Zubiri, is considered a critical measure to bolster stability and ensure a seamless governance transition across the Bangsamoro region.
