BBL passage assured despite senate leadership change

PASAY CITY. May 22, 2018. The House of Senate assured Bangsamoro Basic Law’s (BBL) passage despite leadership change.

Senator Vicente C. Sotto III assumed the Senate Presidency on May 21, 2018 during the resumption of its plenary session.

Sotto’s assumption came after he was nominated by his predecessor Sen.  Aquilino " Koko " Pimentel III who resigned to save the institution from being divided along partisan politics.

The assurance by the Senate leadership was made in the presence of officials of Bangsamoro Transition Commission (BTC) led by MILF 1st Vice Chairman Ghazali Jaafar, MILF Peace Implementing Panel Chair Mohagaher Iqbal, and other stakeholders who jump packed the Senate Session Hall that witnessed the leadership change ahead of the Committee’s Interpellation of Senate Bill 1717 (BTC crafted Bangsamoro Basic Law) relative to the wish of President Rodrigo R. Duterte to pass it before May 31 or before congress goes on break.

It is also noted that the urgency of passing the Senate Bill 1717 illustrated as how the sponsor of the Bill, Sen.  Migs Zubiri parried questions or interpellations of Sen. Franklin Drillon and Sen. Ralph Recto designed to dilly - dally its passage.

Members of Civil Society Organizations (CSO) delegation arrived late to the Senate Hall due to their attendance in the House of Representatives’ continuing caucuses to iron out issues of HB 6475 (BTC crafted BBL).

Obviously, both Houses of Congress are trying to bet the deadli
