Christian Religious Group Pays Courtesy Call to MILF Leadership

Cotabato City – Christian religious leaders paid courtesy visit to the leadership of Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) at Camp Darapanan, Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao on December 26, 2018. They were warmly welcomed by MILF Central Committee members led by MILF Chair Al Haj Murad Ebrahim who expressed his joy and gladness to the gesture of the Christian religious leaders.

The meeting of the two groups was dubbed, “Peace Conversation between the Christian Faith Groups and the MILF Leadership.”

The purpose of their visit was to present their platform on education, information and advocacy campaign in support to the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL) or R.A. 11054, the Organic Law of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (OLBARMM).

Father Johnny Labasan, lead Convener of Christian for Peace Movement said, they intend to educate their constituencies for them to better understand the BOL which is very relevant to their constituents’ minds and hearts. Another thing he said is to overcome fears and doubts among their constituents due to various issues not clear to them.

Father Labasan also said that they have conducted intra-faith dialogue within their religious networks to be able to address those prejudices and biases against other faith. Thus, through understanding the Organic Law they realized that their basic rights are protected, that they feel for their inclusiveness as a Christian Bangsamoro.

MILF Chair Al Haj Murad is his message expressed his appreciation for their efforts and initiatives in support to the advocacy for the organic law. Furthermore, he also recognized the sentiments of brothers and sisters from Christian faith who were also victims of injustices and war conflict.

Al Haj Murad narrated that before the 1972 Martial Law declaration, there was a formation of Ilaga Movement that was designed for a genocidal campaign against the Muslims which strained the “Christian and Muslim relationship.” It was the beginning of the occurrence of misinterpretation of religions between them.

Asked about the rights of Christians in the Bangsamoro, Al Haj Murad told them that, “The BOL secures your basic rights; we will address those injustices committed against you, and allotted a seat for you in the Parliament, and for expansion, you can even create your own political party so your number of representatives in the Bangsamoro Government can be added. Meaning, we assure that your voice in the future government will be heard,” In shaa Allah, Al Haj Murad said.

“It is the duty of the Bangsamoro Government to protect the minorities, not to suffer injustices because we already experienced it before, that is why we struggled. And so we will not allow injustices to happen to others inhabitants of this homeland,” Al Haj Murad stressed.
