BARMM services to continue in Sulu

The Bangsamoro government has assured that services in Sulu will continue despite the Supreme Court's decision to exclude the province from the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
Bangsamoro Spokesperson Mohd Asnin Pendatun stated that there will be no immediate disruption of government services, emphasizing that service delivery in Sulu will remain uninterrupted until further notice.

The Supreme Court ruled that the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL), which established BARMM, is constitutional, but it declared that Sulu should not be part of BARMM due to the 2019 plebiscite results, where a majority of Sulu voters rejected the BOL.

The Bangsamoro government, while welcoming the Supreme Court's affirmation of the BOL's constitutionality, expressed concerns over Sulu's exclusion. Chief Minister Ahod Ebrahim emphasized the historical and cultural ties between Sulu and the Bangsamoro, stating that the region will not be complete without Sulu and its people.

Despite the ruling, the Bangsamoro government remains committed to exploring all avenues to unite the Bangsamoro. They will carefully study the Supreme Court's decision and continue pursuing the dream of a united Bangsamoro, ensuring the full realization of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro.

Meanwhile, the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) has adjusted its calendar of activities for the first parliamentary elections in BARMM, considering the Supreme Court's ruling. The filing period for COCs for district representatives in the BARMM Parliament will be from November 4 to 9, 2024. The filing of COCs for all national and local positions, including BARMM governor, vice governor, and other local officials, will proceed from October 1 to 8, 2024.

COMELEC has decided that Sulu will revert to its original region, Region IX.
