Upholding Democratic Values in the Bangsamoro Elections

As we approach the 2025 elections, a pivotal moment for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) and its neighboring areas is upon us.  With the filing of Certificates of Candidacy (COC) set for October 1-8, 2024, it is critical that all candidates commit to fostering clean, peaceful, honest, and orderly elections.  This commitment is not just a legal obligation; it is a moral imperative reflecting the aspirations of our diverse communities.
The Bangsamoro region has a rich history marked by struggles for autonomy, identity, and inclusive governance. The upcoming elections represent an opportunity to empower citizens, address socio-economic challenges, and build a foundation for sustainable peace.  However, the integrity of this democratic process hinges on the commitment of candidates to uphold the highest standards of conduct.

We call upon all candidates to:

- Embrace Transparency and Honesty:  Provide clear platforms, make realistic and achievable promises, and avoid deceptive practices that undermine public trust. Engage with constituents through honest dialogues, listening to their concerns and aspirations.

- Promote Peace and Non-Violence:  Actively promote peace, advocating for non-violence not just during the election period, but throughout their campaigns.  Denounce any form of violence or intimidation, fostering an environment of respect and dialogue among rivals and supporters.

- Champion Order and Respect for the Law: Adhere to the rules and regulations set forth by the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) and ensure that all campaign activities are conducted in a lawful and respectful manner.  Prioritize the constructive engagement of supporters, encouraging them to rally around ideologies rather than individuals, and avoiding any provocative actions.

- Embrace Inclusivity: Be champions of inclusivity, ensuring that marginalized groups, women, youth, and indigenous peoples are represented and heard. Genuine efforts to reach out to these communities can dismantle past divisions and reinforce a collective identity that celebrates diversity.

- Collaborate for Accountability:  Collaborate with civil society organizations, grassroots movements, and local institutions to bolster accountability and transparency. These partnerships can educate voters about their rights and responsibilities, empowering them to make informed choices on Election Day.

This upcoming election cycle presents a unique opportunity for candidates to demonstrate their commitment to a brighter future for the Bangsamoro. Let us work together to create an electoral landscape that reflects our highest ideals and aspirations—a testament to our resolve for a more peaceful and prosperous tomorrow.
