MoTC-BARMM eyes Malaysian model for public service

COTABATO CITY - The Ministry of Transportation and Communications of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (MoTC-BARMM) is exploring the possibility of adopting Malaysian public service models to improve its own operations in the region.

Minister Paisalin Pangandaman Tago, who led a MoTC delegation on a recent tour of Malaysia, expressed admiration for the country's airport and seaport management policies, which he believes could be beneficial to the BARMM.

"We are keen on adopting some of their governance and public services thrusts for regional application," Tago told reporters on Tuesday.

The delegation met with Malaysian officials, including representatives from the Malaysian Ministry of Transportation, Tabung Haji, and the International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies.  They discussed governance and public service insights, including Tabung Haji's programs promoting finance, health, property, and information technologies.

Tago highlighted the cultural and religious solidarity fostered by the Malaysian government, noting the harmonious coexistence of Malay, Chinese, and Indian communities.  He believes this model of inclusivity could be beneficial for the Bangsamoro region, which also has diverse ethno-linguistic groups.

The MoTC's interest in Malaysian models stems from the country's role as a mediator in the peace talks between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), which led to the establishment of the BARMM in 2019.

The ministry plans to study the feasibility of implementing these models in the BARMM, aiming to enhance public service delivery and promote community empowerment, health, and social welfare in the region.
