BARMM provides 50 housing units to beneficiaries in Maguindanao del Norte

The Bangsamoro Government, through the Ministry of Human Settlements and Development (MHSD), has awarded 50 housing units with land development improvements to beneficiaries in Barangay Nabalawag, Barira, Maguindanao del Norte.  The project, funded under the General Appropriations Act of the Bangsamoro (GAAB) 2021, marks a significant step in providing shelter and improving the socio-economic conditions of vulnerable communities in the region.
Beneficiaries expressed their gratitude during the awarding ceremony held on October 10 at the MHSD Office in Cotabato City.

Hassana Balitoc, one of the recipients, highlighted the impact of the project, stating that shelter is no longer a worry for them and that the housing units have significantly improved their lives.

The housing units, part of the MHSD's Resettlement Housing Program, are designed to provide costless housing with water systems, solar lights, access roads, and support services for resettlement, which may include livelihood services from partner agencies.  The program targets former Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) combatants, the poorest of the poor, victims of calamity or conflict, indigenous people, and internally displaced persons (IDPs).

MHSD Minister Hamid Aminoddin Barra emphasized that the ongoing housing programs are a direct result of the decades-long armed struggle in the Bangsamoro region, which led to the signing of the peace accords and the enactment of the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL).  Under the BOL, the Bangsamoro Government is mandated to address the lack of shelters, settlements, and livelihood for disadvantaged and homeless communities, especially those affected by conflicts and atrocities.

Barra urged beneficiaries to transform the housing units into "homes," emphasizing the importance of creating a positive and stable environment for families.  He also encouraged recipients to preserve the gains of the Bangsamoro peace process.

MHSD Director-General Esmael Ebrahim said the Ministry is aiming to provide an additional 100 housing units, another 150 from the National Housing Authority (NHA), and 100 units for each of the six previously acknowledged major camps.

The turnover and awarding activities align with the month-long celebration of National Shelter Month, established by Proclamation No. 662, s. 1995, signed by former president Fidel Ramos.  The project also aligns with the fifth priority agenda of Bangsamoro Chief Minister Ahod Ebrahim, which focuses on developing a system of reliable and resilient infrastructure to spur economic growth in the BARMM.
