MILF pleads with Senate to proceed with scheduled BARMM election in 2025

COTABATO CITY - The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) has submitted a resolution to the Senate leadership expressing its preference for the first parliamentary elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) to proceed as scheduled in May 2025.
The resolution, delivered by MILF Central Committee Chairman Ahod Ebrahim, underscores the group’s commitment to upholding the democratic processes agreed upon in the peace agreements with the Government of the Philippines and ensuring continued progress in the region.
Mohagher Iqbal, the chief of the MILF Peace Implementing Panel, described the resolution as a “significant step” demonstrating the organization’s dedication to stability, political inclusiveness, and the future of the Bangsamoro people within a democratic framework.
The MILF, through its political party, the United Bangsamoro Justice Party (UBJP), is actively participating in the election process.
Ebrahim and Iqbal serve as the UBJP’s president and vice president, respectively.
The resolution comes in response to recent Congressional bills seeking to postpone the BARMM election until May 2026. These proposals were prompted by the Supreme Court's decision to exclude Sulu from the BARMM, necessitating adjustments to the electoral districts and representation.
The MILF’s stance reflects its commitment to the democratic process and its belief that the election should proceed as planned. The group has already fielded candidates for the party-list and district seats, and is prepared for full participation in the election.
The Comelec, despite the Congressional proposals, remains committed to holding the BARMM election in a synchronized process with the national and local elections on May 12, 2025.
