Amnesty program for MILF, MNLF sees low turnout, says NAC

Cotabato City - The National Amnesty Commission (NAC) has reported a low turnout of Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) members availing the government's Amnesty Program.
National Amnesty Commissioner Atty. Jomar Kulayan, in an interview with reporters here, revealed that while the Commission has received 1,390 applications from various rebel groups through nine Local Amnesty Boards nationwide, the majority of these applications (1,000) are from members of the Communist Party of the Philippines, New People's Army, and National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF).

Only 250 applications were received from the MILF and 160 from the MNLF.

Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur, has seen the highest number of applications from NPA members, with 230 individuals seeking amnesty.

Comparing the number of applications received from MILF and MNLF members to the estimated 40,000 former combatants from these groups, the NAC has only received 0.5% of potential applicants.

The NAC attributes the low turnout to a lack of documentation among applicants from the two Moro fronts.

The Commission continues to urge individuals with pending cases to take advantage of the government's amnesty program, which grants pardon and protection from prosecution.
