BARMM celebrates World Hijab Day, emphasizing faith, identity, resistance

Cotabato City -  The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) joined the global celebration of World Hijab Day on February 1, 2025, with a focus on the hijab's deeper meaning as a symbol of faith, identity, and resistance against societal pressures and stereotypes.
The event, themed #HijabisUnsilenced, featured keynote speaker Mishael Khadija, popularly known as Queenie Padilla, who shared her journey to Islam and her decision to embrace the hijab.

Padilla emphasized the hijab's significance as an act of obedience to Allah, offering both physical and spiritual security for women.

Hadja Bainon G. Karon, chairperson of the Bangsamoro Women's Commission (BWC), reaffirmed the BARMM's commitment to supporting the global movement, stating, "In BARMM, we stand in solidarity, embracing the diversity and richness of Islamic heritage."

The event included a talk show segment hosted by Princess Habiba Paudac, where Padilla shared her experiences and reflections on the hijab, engaging in an open forum with attendees.

Representatives from various sectors, including civil society organizations (CSOs), youth groups, and academia, expressed their support for the event.

World Hijab Day, first launched in 2013 by Nazma Khan, aims to encourage women of all backgrounds to experience wearing the hijab and foster acceptance.

The BARMM continues to express support for House Bills No. 1363 and 3725, which seek to declare February 1 as National Hijab Day.

The event served as a platform to educate the public about the hijab and advocate for the right of women to wear it freely, without fear of discrimination or prejudice.

The BARMM's commitment to celebrating World Hijab Day demonstrates its dedication to promoting religious freedom, cultural diversity, and the empowerment of women within the region.
