Sulu inclusion in BARMM takes center stage at senate hearing

Chief Minister Ahod “Al Haj Murad” Ebrahim, alongside Education Minister Mohagher Iqbal and Interior and Local Government Minister Atty. Sha Elijah Dumama-Alba, represented the BARMM government at the hearing, presided over by Senators Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito and Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri.
The hearing focused on the re-inclusion of the island province of Sulu into the Bangsamoro Autonomous Regional Government and delved into the deliberation of proposed measures to amend the Republic Act No. 11054, known as the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL).
Senator Ejercito underscored the critical need for Congress to enact legislation addressing the region’s pressing issues. He highlighted the importance of SBN 2915, which aims to include the province of Sulu in the BARMM, and SBN 2820, which seeks to amend the qualifications for Shari'ah judges.
A diverse group of stakeholders attended the hearing, including Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Deputy Executive Director for Operations Atty. Rafael Olaño, members of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) Parliament, and Sulu Provincial Governor Abdusakur Tan, along with mayors from various municipalities in the province.
The hearing provided a platform for a robust discussion on the proposed amendments to the BOL, potentially paving the way for a more inclusive and representative Bangsamoro government.
