Bangsamoro Parliament takes steps to expand dialysis services in Maguindanao del Norte

Cotabato City - The Health Committee of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) Parliament held a public hearing on Wednesday, Feb. 19, to discuss Parliament Bill No. 145 that aimed at establishing a full regional dialysis center at the Cotabato Sanitarium and General Hospital in Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao del Norte.

The bill, introduced by Member of Parliament Romeo Sema, seeks to upgrade the hospital's existing dialysis facility, addressing the lack of sufficient medical facilities in the region, which often forces patients to travel to larger cities for treatment.

"This bill is crucial to making dialysis services more accessible for residents of the region," Sema explained.

Dr. Ibrahim Pangato Jr., the hospital’s chief, expressed support for the proposed measure, highlighting its potential to expand services and provide vital support to patients in need.

He emphasized that while the hospital currently has a dialysis facility, the upgrade would significantly enhance their capacity.

Health Committee Chair Hashemi Dilangalen underscored the growing public health concern of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in the region.  He warned that untreated CKD can lead to serious complications, including end-stage renal disease and even death.

The committee assured all stakeholders that feedback and recommendations from healthcare professionals and the public will be carefully considered during the bill's deliberations.

This public hearing marks a crucial step towards ensuring accessible and quality healthcare services for the residents of Maguindanao del Norte.
