The Young Moro Professionals Network (YMPN) has issued a strong condemnation against Governor Peter Unabia of Misamis Oriental following remarks he made during a political campaign rally for the upcoming May 2025 elections. The governor’s statements, which allegedly linked recent criminal activity and security issues to unfamiliar individuals in the province, were widely perceived as discriminatory toward the Muslim community, particularly the Maranao people.
In an official statement, YMPN denounced the governor's remarks as "hate speech" and "conduct unbecoming" of a public servant.
“There’s no room for toleration of such discriminatory remarks that invite bias against someone based on race, ethnicity, national origin or religion,” the group declared, emphasizing that political campaigning does not excuse behavior that violates the principles of non-discrimination as enshrined in the Philippine Constitution and Republic Act No. 6713, or the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees.
The backlash follows a recent speech by Governor Unabia, in which he raised concerns about counterfeit currency and unfamiliar individuals entering Misamis Oriental. The Muslim community interpreted these comments as veiled accusations against Maranao-Muslims, prompting widespread criticism and calls for accountability.
In response to the criticism, Governor Unabia issued a public apology, clarifying that his intention was not to offend and affirming his respect for the dignity and contributions of the Muslim community. He emphasized that he valued the province’s cultural diversity and regretted any distress caused by his remarks.
YMPN, however, stressed that more than an apology is needed. They urged the governor to initiate a dialogue with Moro communities in the province and revisit the historical and economic contributions of Muslims, especially in Cagayan de Oro City.
“Muslims in the province, particularly those residing in Cagayan de Oro City, have greatly contributed to the local economy,” the group noted, citing lawful business practices, government service, and peaceful interfaith relations.
The YMPN also highlighted the long-standing coexistence of Muslims, Christians, and Lumads in the region, and called for unity over political division. “Now is not the time for us to sow hate and anger between each other. Peace is of utmost priority rather than anyone’s political agenda,” the statement added, urging Unabia’s fellow party members to remind him of the importance of a principled and objective campaign strategy.
The organization emphasized that Islam teaches respect for all people and refraining from insults, even in response to provocation. “We want to correct the act of wrongdoing more than the wrongdoer,” they said, encouraging fellow peacebuilders to take the higher road and strengthen efforts toward education, coexistence, and conflict prevention.
Finally, the group called on relevant government agencies to formally reprimand Governor Unabia for his “reckless act” and to ensure safeguards are in place to prevent future incidents. “While a public statement may seem to be the immediate solution to mitigate any further friction, any future similar act must be prevented,” they said.
The incident has sparked broader conversations on ethical leadership, the role of language in promoting unity, and the importance of cultural sensitivity in political discourse, especially in a province as diverse as Misamis Oriental.
