Bangsamoro Darul-Ifta’ Begins Deliberation on Islamic Condolence Guidelines

The Islamic scholars and jurists examined the religious foundations, appropriate conduct, and cultural practices surrounding Ta’ziyah. A key issue addressed was whether it is permissible for the grieving family to prepare food for visitors, a common practice in some communities but one that draws differing views among scholars.
While there was unanimous agreement on the virtue of offering condolences as an act of compassion and community solidarity, participants differed on the issue of food preparation. Some jurists expressed concern that it places an undue burden on the family of the deceased, while others viewed it as a gesture of generosity and community bonding.
The session ended without a definitive ruling, highlighting the diversity of thought within various Islamic schools of jurisprudence. The Chief of the Fatwa Division and other scholars agreed to continue the discussion in future sessions and stressed the need to promote simplicity during mourning.
They also encouraged practices such as neighbors preparing food for the bereaved, which they noted align more closely with Prophetic traditions.
Further deliberations are expected to contribute to the development of practical and context-sensitive guidelines on Ta’ziyah in the Bangsamoro region.
