Almost 500 environmental advocates came together on June 25, 2025, at Camp Iranon—formerly known as Camp Abubakar—in Barira, Maguindanao del Norte to celebrate the Philippine National Arbor Day through a large-scale tree planting event. This initiative, shared in a post by Kutawato Greenland Initiatives, Inc. (KGI) on their Facebook page, highlighted a strong community commitment to environmental protection and peacebuilding in one of the Bangsamoro region’s most historically significant sites. 

The event was organized by KGI, in collaboration with the 1st Marine Brigade, BARMM ministries, civil society organizations, youth groups, and development partners. Volunteers traveled from Cotabato City to join the activity, beginning with an opening ceremony at the Marine Brigade Covered Court. Lt. Col. John Dela Cruz warmly welcomed everyone, reminding participants that planting trees in this place symbolizes hope, unity, and the promise of sustainability after years of conflict.

Danilo T. Mocsin, Chairperson of KGI, emphasized the importance of the initiative not just in environmental terms but also as a way to build partnerships and inspire volunteerism. “We are nearly 500 eco-stewards united in our mission and hope,” he remarked, pointing out KGI’s ongoing efforts in climate change adaptation, forest restoration, and youth involvement in climate-vulnerable and conflict-affected areas of Bangsamoro.

Supportive messages from key BARMM agencies and partner groups reinforced the link between environmental care, cultural heritage, and inclusive governance. The program also included a commitment signing on environmental protection and a meaningful “Hanging Notes of Hope” activity where participants tied their personal pledges to trees. 

A total of 600 native seedlings, including Narra, Mahogany, Bamboo, and Acacia, were planted with seedlings provided by MENRE-BARMM and KGI.

The event’s significance lies in the transformation of Camp Abubakar—a place once known for conflict—into a thriving green space that represents renewal and peace.
