Iqbal Urges Graduates to Use Education for Service and Moral Leadership

Cotabato City — Bangsamoro Education Minister Mohagher Iqbal emphasized the importance of using education not just for personal success but as a lifelong commitment to public service and moral responsibility, during his keynote speech at the 2025 Commencement Exercises of Cotabato State University (CSU).
Speaking before graduates, faculty, and families, Iqbal said the event was not just a celebration of academic achievement but a reflection of the students' determination, faith, and contribution to the Bangsamoro community. He highlighted CSU’s theme, “Excellence Beyond Borders – Transforming the Future through Lifelong Learning,” as deeply relevant to the region's goals for inclusive and transformative education.

“True learning knows no borders—not of geography, discipline, or self-interest,” Iqbal said, urging graduates to pursue education rooted in purpose and service. He added that in the Bangsamoro, education is a tool to strengthen faith, promote justice, and advance moral governance.

Sharing his personal story, Iqbal recalled joining the Bangsamoro revolution at a young age despite being advised otherwise. He credited his quality education as the key that allowed him to contribute meaningfully to the peace process, including serving as the chief negotiator of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and helping secure historic agreements like the Framework Agreement on the Bangsamoro (FAB), the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB), and eventually the passage of the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL).

“If I did not acquire my two degrees, the MILF would have somebody else as its chief negotiator,” he said, highlighting how education shaped the course of the region’s history.

He thanked CSU officials, teachers, and staff for their commitment to Bangsamoro learners and for upholding moral governance in the education sector. He also acknowledged the sacrifices of parents and guardians who supported the graduates throughout their academic journey.

To the graduates, Iqbal called for active engagement in society, responsible leadership, and civic participation. He quoted Greek philosopher Plato, saying, “The price good men pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men,” and urged them to stand up for their rights and choose leaders wisely.
