BARMM launches landmark Regional Learners' Health Program amidst 51st Nutrition Month Celebration

UPI, MAGUINDANAO DEL NORTE – The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) marked a significant step towards holistic learner well-being with the official launch of the Regional Learners' Health Assessment and Screening (LHAS) Program on July 2, 2025.

The program's inauguration at Kabutoyen Elementary School in Upi, Maguindanao del Norte, was held in conjunction with the 51st Nutrition Month Celebration, emphasizing the critical link between health and education.

A collaborative effort between the Ministry of Basic, Higher and Technical Education (MBHTE), the Ministry of Health (MOH), and Local Government Units (LGUs) through their Health and Nutrition Units, the LHAS Program is a region-wide initiative set to provide annual health checkups for all learners across BARMM.

The joint celebration, themed "Food at Nutrition Security, Maging Priority! Sapat na Pagkain, Karapatan Natin!" ("Food and Nutrition Security, Be a Priority! Adequate Food, Our Right!"), underscored the fundamental right to accessible and adequate nutrition, particularly for school-aged children. The event drew a diverse gathering of learners, educators, parents, health professionals, and local officials, participating in a day filled with health-focused activities, medical screenings, educational sessions, and strong nutrition advocacy.

As part of the program's initial rollout, 210 Kindergarten and Grade 1 learners from Kapilit, Blensong, F. Besas, and Kabutoyen Elementary Schools received comprehensive free health services. These vital services included nutritional assessments, vision and hearing screenings, dental evaluations, physical and mental health checks, and health history intake. The initiative also actively promoted PhilHealth registration and encouraged active parent engagement to ensure continuous holistic care and prompt identification of potential health concerns.

MBHTE officials present at the launch included Bureau Director for Basic Education Johnny Balawag, Bureau Director for Indigenous Peoples Education Judith Caubalejo, and Schools Division Superintendent of Maguindanao del Norte Alma Abdula-Nor. They were joined by key officials from the Ministry of Health, notably Chief of the Nutrition Division Celia C. Sagaral, along with members of the Health and Nutrition Team.

The LHAS Program stands as a testament to MBHTE’s unwavering commitment to fostering an inclusive, learner-centered educational environment that prioritizes the complete well-being of every Bangsamoro child, ensuring that no learner is overlooked or left behind in their journey towards a healthier future.
