Bangsamoro government declares late MILF chairman’s residence a historical Site

Barira, Maguindanao del Norte – The Bangsamoro government has officially designated the former home of the late Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) chairman, Sheikh Salamat Hashim, located in Barira town, Maguindanao del Norte, as a historical site. This recognition, announced by the Bangsamoro Information Office on Monday, honors Hashim’s enduring legacy.
Last week, the Bangsamoro Commission for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage (BCPCH) unveiled a marker at Hashim’s house located within the former Camp Abubakar, acknowledging the site’s “significant role in shaping Bangsamoro history.”

BCPCH Chairperson Dr. Salem Lingasa remarked, “It is only right that we begin here, at Camp Abubakar, in the heart of a place that has witnessed so much of our history, and in the residence of a leader whose name and life are etched in the consciousness of every Bangsamoro.”

In line with the Bangsamoro Autonomy Act No. 61, or the “Bangsamoro Memorial Marker Act of 2024,” an eco-park is planned to be established within the former camp area to further honor the legacy of significant historical sites. The BCPCH also plans to install markers at additional historical locations across all BARMM provinces.

Sheikh Salamat Hashim broke away from the Moro National Liberation Front in 1977 to found the MILF, continuing the fight for an independent Bangsamoro homeland after peace talks with the Marcos government led to the 1976 Tripoli Agreement. The MILF later shifted its stance from secession to autonomy, culminating in peace negotiations and the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB), which laid the groundwork for the creation of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
