Authorities enforce gun ban ahead of 1st BARMM parliamentary polls

COTABATO CITY – A region-wide gun ban has been initiated in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) as police, military, and Marine forces establish checkpoints to ensure a peaceful October 13 parliamentary election.
According to city police director Col. Jibin Bongcayao, the enforcement of Commission on Elections (Comelec) Resolution No. 11149 began on Thursday, August 14, and prohibits the transport and possession of firearms, explosives, and ammunition throughout the election period. The ban applies to everyone, including members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP).

The election period, which runs from August 14 to October 28, covers the provinces of Maguindanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, Basilan, and Tawi-Tawi, as well as their cities and the eight new municipalities of the region's Special Geographic Area (SGA).

BARMM police regional director Brig. Gen. Jaysen de Guzman stated that weekly evaluations will be conducted across the region to identify and address any potential threats to the voting process.

Voters will be electing 80 members to the first Bangsamoro Parliament.
