MP Iqbal urges responsible use of social media amid challenges

In a statement posted on his official Facebook page, Iqbal acknowledged the dual nature of technology, emphasizing that while social media platforms like Facebook are free and accessible to all — including those with criminal intent — they also pose challenges in their potential misuse.
"No one can control what is written in the Facebook accounts of all users,” Iqbal said.
"The medium is free and accessible to everyone including the criminally-minded. This is the downside of the advent of technology. It can be useful or a curse to the people,”Iqbal said.
He appealed to users not to use social media as a tool to destroy reputations or foment intrigues within society.
At the same time, Iqbal advised those targeted by online criticism to reflect honestly on whether the allegations contain any truth.
"If true, then accept and make amends,” he said, “and if not, then don’t be onion-skinned.”
Iqbal further underscored that mudslinging is often a part of chaotic times or intense ideological conflicts, noting that such attacks may come not only from true adversaries but also from individuals who engage in it as a pastime.
His message highlights the delicate balance between free expression and responsible use in an evolving digital landscape within the BARMM region.
