COMELEC defers 1st BARMM Parliamentary elections

The Commission on Elections deferred the first parliamentary elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) scheduled on March 30 this year by the Supreme court.
In a resolution issued yesterday, January 29, Thursday, the deferment is dependent on the passage of a law by congress fixing the date of the BARMM electoral exercise.

The Comelec said that election timelines are too proximate, which made the conduct of the BARMM elections not feasible on March 30, Philstar said in a report.

In the resolution, the poll body ordered all activities related to the BARMM parliamentary election, including the election period, set aside and terminated.

Maintaining that time is not sufficient to hold the BARMM elections in March, Comelec Chairman George Garcia said the poll body would wait for Congress to enact a law rescheduling the Bangsamoro voting, the report said.

P1.2 billion allotted for the printing of ballots for the BARMM election, which was originally scheduled on Oct. 13 last year, is still intact.
He appealed to Congress not to schedule the BARMM vote in 2027 or 2028 as there is a general election that must be held.
