MENRE turns over new environment office in Basilan

LAMITAN CITY, BASILAN – The Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy (MENRE) turned over a new Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENREO) building to Basilan province on March 7, as part of efforts to boost environmental governance and service delivery in the region.

The two-story structure, covering over 2,000 square meters within the Basilan Government Center, will serve as the central hub for PENREO Basilan’s initiatives in forest protection, sustainable land management, biodiversity conservation, environmental management, and energy development.

Leading the ceremonial turnover were MENRE Minister Akmad Brahim, Deputy Minister Muslima Asmawil, and Basilan Governor Mujiv Hataman.

In his address, Minister Brahim emphasized that the facility embodies the Bangsamoro Government’s dedication to safeguarding natural resources while uplifting local communities.

“This milestone reflects our commitment to strengthening institutions that safeguard Basilan’s natural resources and support the well-being of its communities,” Brahim stated.

He added that the new building will enhance operational efficiency for provincial personnel and improve coordination with local governments, communities, and development partners.

Funded under the 2024 General Appropriations Act of the Bangsamoro, the project is part of the regional government’s broader push to upgrade environmental, natural resources, and energy services across BARMM.

Also present during the turnover ceremony were MENRE Director-General for ENR Badr Salendab, Director Al-Sharif Tamburani, Chief Planning Officer Jessie S. Ondoy, and provincial ENRE officers from Tawi-Tawi and Sulu.

The event coincided with Basilan’s 52nd founding anniversary. On the same day, MENRE partnered with the provincial government to distribute land titles to beneficiaries of the “Libreng Sukat at Handog Titulo para sa Bangsamoro” program, providing formal ownership documents to qualified residents.
