TURTLE ISLANDS, TAWI-TAWI – Farmers and fisherfolk in Barangay Taganak, Municipality of Turtle Islands, received vital support from the government as the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Agrarian Reform (MAFAR) brought its services to the area through a convergence activity held on Saturday, March 28.
Led by Norton G. Aliman, Chief of MAFAR’s Fisheries Regulatory and Law Enforcement Division, together with representatives from the Philippine Coast Guard, local government officials, and provincial staff, the program aimed to strengthen the livelihoods of residents who primarily depend on farming and fishing for their income.
The farmers warmly welcomed assistance including fertilizers and soil conditioners to help improve their harvests. Agricultural tools such as knapsack sprayers and hog wires were also distributed to ease their daily work. In addition, fruit tree seedlings – including durian, lanzones, coffee, and mangosteen – were provided as a long-term source of income for families.
The fishing sector also received support, with 16 motorized engines and related equipment turned over to enhance the efficiency and safety of fishermen at sea. Fish pots were distributed to encourage more sustainable fishing practices. Some beneficiaries were also assisted in securing their fisherfolk identification cards to facilitate easier access to other government programs.
In addition to the aid distribution, MAFAR conducted information sessions on fisheries regulations, transport permits, and proper handling of fishery products. The sessions aimed to equip the community with the necessary knowledge to maintain responsible fishing practices and ensure high-quality produce.
Mohammad Faisal H. Jamalul, the town's vice mayor, thanked the government for its continued support, noting that such programs greatly help improve residents’ livelihoods and strengthen ties between local government and Bangsamoro agencies.
The activity demonstrates the government’s ongoing efforts to reach far-flung and underserved communities, ensuring that farmers and fisherfolk – even those in island areas like the Turtle Islands – receive adequate support for their livelihoods.
