OPAPRU Chief lauds MILF Chairman’s statesmanship, backs new Bangsamoro Parliament

COTABATO CITY — Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU) Secretary Mel Senen Sarmiento has recognized Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) Chairman Al Haj Murad Ebrahim for demonstrating statesmanship and placing the greater interests of the Bangsamoro people above political differences following the formation of the region’s new parliamentary leadership.

In a social media post, Sarmiento recalled his October 7 appeal to elected Bangsamoro leaders to rise above political divisions and prioritize the welfare of their constituents. He emphasized that healthy and respectful debate strengthens democracy but should never become an obstacle to serving communities.

The OPAPRU chief also welcomed Murad’s message as the regular Bangsamoro Parliament began its inaugural session, particularly his call for unity and continued commitment to moral governance, genuine reform, and lasting peace. He described the statement as a testament to true statesmanship, putting the welfare of the Bangsamoro people first as the region enters a new chapter of democratic governance. The statement was posted on the official Facebook page of the MILF chairman.

Recognizing the MILF leader’s lifelong advocacy for peace and meaningful self-governance, Sarmiento stressed that autonomy should go beyond political power. He said it must provide opportunities for the people, generate economic growth, and enable the Bangsamoro to achieve its full potential. He also emphasized that true leadership is measured by the better future it prepares for the people.

Sarmiento further expressed OPAPRU’s readiness to work alongside the new Parliament to safeguard the gains of peace and build a stronger and more prosperous Bangsamoro. He underscored the importance of translating decades of struggle and hard-earned peace into lasting development and tangible benefits for Bangsamoro communities.

The Peace Adviser called on all Bangsamoro leaders to draw inspiration from Murad’s example of statesmanship and work together to ensure that the region’s new political chapter advances peace, unity, and prosperity.
