Danny Kalanduyan, USA-based Maguindanaon Kulintang master pasess away

A Maguindanaon Kulintang master, Prof. Danongan “Danny” Kalanduyan, based in California, USA, died last Wednesday due to cardiac arrest according to his relatives.

Detail from his facebook account tells Kalanduyan was a lecturer at San Francisco University and Skyline College.  

From 1976 to 1984, Kalundayan was an an artist-in-residence in the ethnomusicology University of Washington in Seattle.

He also became director of the Filipino Kulintang Center in San Francisco.

Kalanduyan was recognized as Master Artist in the American soil bestowed with National Heritage Fellowship Award.

Kulintang ensemble is comprised of gongs and drum commonly played by ethnic tribes in Mindanao, Sulu and Borneo.

Kalanduyan was born in Datu Piang. He studied at Mindanao State Univerity-Marawi where he became member of Darangan Cultural Troupe.

Bapa (uncle) Danongan will be missed but his legacy will remain,” niece Rhydz Mangulamas Anayatin said.

Judith Ferrer, Kalundayan’s former student said, “Master Danny Kalanduyan was an amazing teacher. He brought the love of his people and music here to the US and enriched the lives of so many.”

She added, “I am truly grateful to have studied under him and share the stage with him.”
