A strong 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck off Southern Mindanao

A strong 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the town of Sarangani, Davao Occidental at 4:23 AM on Saturday (April 29).


The incident prompted the  the National Disaster Risk Reduction Coordinating Council issue warning for possibility of tsunami. 

Few minutes later, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) cancelled the warning. The agency further said that the quake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 57 kilometer. 

The tremor was also felt at intensity 5 in Alabel, Glan and Malapatan in Sarangani Province, Palimbang in Sultan Kudarat Province and City of General Santos.

Phivolcs recorded a total of 36 aftershocks as of 9 AM of the same day. 

The quake also caused power outage in some areas of General Santos and Malungon, Sarangani Province according to Phivolcs. 

Concerned agencies and LGUs conducted assessment to determine the extent of the damage.
