MILF chairman to lead BTA

Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) Chairman Alhaj Murad Ebrahim would be leading the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) once it is established after the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL) is ratified in the forthcoming plebiscite.

This after its Central Committee unanimously passed a resolution on August 16, 2018 expressing its consensus to officially endorse to Pres. Rodrigo Duterte the appointment of Chairman Ebrahim as Interim Chief Minister immediately after the ratification of BOL.

The decision of the Central Committee was made public on August 21 during its expanded meeting attended by top ranking officials of the MILF’s political committees, its military wing the Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces, and its political party the United Bangsamoro Justice Party (UBJP).

Close to a thousand military and political leaders of the Front attended the meeting held in Camp Darapanan in the afternoon of the day of Eidul Adha or Feast of the Sacrifice. Big contingents from the island-provinces of Sulu, Basilan and Tawi-Tawi made it to the meeting inspite of the short notice and the very important occasion of Eid.

Commenting on the resolution, Chairman Ebrahim admitted his hesitance to head the BTA but said he has to defer to the consensus of the Central Committee.

The BTA will be the interim government for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region during the transition period. Under the BOL, the MILF shall lead the BTA. It shall be composed of 80 members, all of whom will be appointed by the President. In addition, all elected officials of the ARMM (i.e. Regional Governor, Vice Regional Governor and assemblymen) shall automatically be part of BTA but shall serve only up to June 30, 2019. Youth, women, settler communities, non-Moro indigenous peoples, traditional leaders and other sectors shall also be represented in the BTA. ###
