Maranao Madaris teachers, mothers in Gensan attend livelihood training

More than twenty Maranao Madaris teachers and mothers including young adults in General Santos City attended on Wednesday (Nov 7) a livelihood training, an engagement that capacitates themselves in economic undertaking that could increase their household income.

The activity, which provided the beneficiaries with knowledge in processing tuna, was spearheaded by the City Mayor’s Office-Indigenous Cultural Affairs Division, a unit of the local government that caters the needs of the Indigenous Peoples and Moro constituents of the city.

“The skills training teaches our beneficiaries in adding value to tuna and with that they would know how to produce tuna chorizo, embutido and tocino,” said Dr. Janena Tito, head of the ICCAD.

Together with the increasing inflation being experienced in the country, Tito underscored the necessity for the couples to earn.

“Most often the earning of the husband alone is not sufficient for the needs of the family,” she said.

The training was held at Madrasah MEBA which is one of the 38 Madrasah centers in the city. ICCAD has already conducted seven livelihood trainings in seven Madrasah centers in the city benefitting others and out-of-school youth.

Tito said the support of the city government on livelihood skills training held in Madrasah centers is one way of helping in the expansion of the services of Arabic schools to the Muslim communities.

Madrasah centers offer Arabic literacy and Islamic values education to Muslim youth on Saturdays and Sundays.

For more than a decade the local government of General Santos City has been providing monthly honorarium to Asatidz (Madrasah teachers) whose number has reached to 138 this year. 

Aside from teaching in Madaris, the Asatidz also engage in giving community-based lectures on tolerance, understanding, harmony, reconciliation and peace at the grassroots in their will to help in the peacebuilding efforts in the town.

Some Asatidz who are skilled in mediation also facilitate in the conflict resolution of marital and property disputes that are brought to their attention.

General Santos City is a home for Christian Settlers, IPs and Moro tribes that include the Maranaos.
