Malacañang Palace to review plan to extend Bangsamoro transition by three years

Malacañang said on Thursday it will review the resolution proposed by the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) asking the Philippine Congress to extend by three years the Bangsamoro transition period which will end supposedly in 2022. In a press briefing, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said, “It’s the first time po na narinig itong request na ito (we heard this request). I’m sure the Palace will consider it and will study options.”

BTA adopted on Tuesday (November 17) proposed Resolution No. 332 urging the House of Representatives and the Senate of the Philippines to extend the Bangsamoro transition period from year 2022 to 2025.

One of the principal authors of the resolution, Member of the Parliament (MP) Jose Lorena, said the proposition is to provide the BTA with sufficient time to continue in performing its powers and functions, and complete its mandate.

Bangsamoro Chief Minister Ahod Ebrahim expressed his favor to the recommendation of the peace advocacy group, Mindanao People’s Caucus (MPC), on extending the transition period for another three years.

MPC recently conducted a rapid mid-term review on the Bangsamoro transition.

Education Minister MP Moqagher Iqbal said the three-year transition is too short and cited that the Moro Islamic Liberation Front pushed for six-year transition during the peace negotiation.

The BTA resolution also mentioned the calls from the League of Municipalities of the Philippines’ (LMP) chapter in Tawi-Tawi, Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Tawi-Tawi, and Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Maguindanao to extend the Bangsamoro transition period.

The proposal drew mixed reactions from the netizens.
