Samal – Bajao group attends meeting on BTA extension

ZAMBOANGA CITY (January 16, 2021)-Leaving no stones unturned is the continuing effort being exerted by peace advocates in this city to provide substantial information, and capacity-building in the Bangsamoro grassroot communities.
Recently, the Federation of Bangsamoro Communities Outside of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (BCOABAR-Fed) along with Bangsamoro Civil Society Organization (CSO) organized an activity aimed at enlightening some members of the most marginalized Bangsamoro sub-tribe, the Samal-Badjao in Zamboanga City.

The meeting on Wednesday, January 13 held at the city’s remote village of Cawit was in support to the call of Bangsamoro Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) for the extension of Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) from 2022 to 2025.

Through the request of Samal-Badao group for updates on the current status of the BARMM, Ustadh Taha Daranda, a CSO head visited the area and apprised them on the present development of BARMM and the call of various CSOs concerning the BTA extension.

“Article VI. Section 12. of the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL) provided an explicit provision that guaranteed the welfare of the Bangsamoro residing outside the BARMM areas on socio-economic assistance that may uplift the quality of life of all Bangsamoro people residing outside the BARRM areas,” Ustadh Daranda said.

Ustadh Daranda added that among the reasons why the BTA Term should be extended is for the BTA to implement substantially the salient provisions of the BOL.

Mr. Lisam Abbas, a Community Organizer for Samal-Bajao in Barangay Cawit expressed his profound gratitude to the CSO, and to Ustadh Daranda for the valuable information and updates that have enlightened his group on crucial issues on BARMM Governance and its programs.

The participants are mostly internally displaced persons (IDPs) many of them are still lingering in evacuation sites after they were displaced during the 2013 Zamboanga siege.

Mr. Tirso Tahir of the Bangsamoro Leadership and Management Institute (BLMI) has been facilitating series of activities in the Bangsamoro grassroots communities aimed to capacitate and encourage the Bangsamoro to be participative in peacebuilding for the greater interest of the Bangsamoro people.
