Former lair of armed groups in Basilan is recipient of BARMM infra project

COTABATO CITY, BARMM —  Al-Barka, Basilan, scene of several encounters between armed groups and security forces is a recipient of public market infra project from  the Bangsamoro government.
During  a meeting at the Bangsamoro Government Center, Friday, MILG Minister Naguid Sinarimbo released half of the funds for the project in the conflict-torn Al-Barka town.

Mayor Jaydeefar Lajid of Al-Barka received the P7.5 million worth check. The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao have allotted P15 million for the project.

The once dangerous Al-Barka repeatedly hit the news, from between the 1990s until about seven years ago, due to the deadly clashes in the area between armed groups and state forces that affected thousands of residents and caused widespread poverty in its barangays, said a report by Philstar on Saturday.

Lajid, chairperson of the Al-Barka municipal peace and order council, said he and his constituents are grateful to the BARMM government for helping bail them out from poverty and underdevelopment as a result of armed conflicts, the Philstar report also said.

“We are hoping that the news about Al-Barka in the years to come shall be about its economic growth and how peace and sustainable development in the municipality are taking off,” Sinarimbo said.

In another development, Minister Sinarimbo said in his FB post that they have also released to the municipal government of Sitangkai, Tawi Tawi 50 percent of the funds for the construction of their public market.

Sitangkai is one of the farthest municipalities of the BARMM as sits near our border with Malaysia and Indonesia and its communities live on stilt houses. The design of our piblic market will adopt to this environment.

The MILG-BARMM is also partly focused on the construction of barangay halls in the 63 Bangsamoro barangays in Cotabato province in Region 12, grouped as the Special Geographic Area, or SGA, of the autonomous region, the Philstar report further said.
