Arab League calls for investigation into the crimes of Israeli forces against Palestinian demonstrators

The League of Arab States has called for an investigation into the crime committed by Israeli forces during a dispersal of demonstration at Gaza border resulting to the death of 60 Palestinians on Monday (May 14) and injuring 2,000 others.

In a report by Arabnews, Arab League chief Ahmed Aboul Gheit said, “We call for a credible international investigation into the crimes committed by the occupation.”

Gheit spoke during the recent extraordinary meeting of the Arab foreign ministers in Cairo, Egypt.

The Palestinians staged a mass demonstration to protest the move of the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. 

Reports said the Israeli forces fired live bullets and tear gas to disperse the protesting crowd.

 “We are facing a state of blatant aggression against international law and legitimacy, which was embodied by the US embassy’s transfer in the occupying state to Jerusalem,” the Arabnews quoted Gheit.

The event prompted the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to issue a statement condemning the bloody response of the Israeli forces against the protesters.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan lambasted Israel describing its lethal action against the Palestinian demonstrators as “genocide.”

The Arab League was born in 1945 initially comprised of six member-states and has grown into 22 members as of 2016.

Its member countries are Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.
