LGUs should serve Halal foods to Muslim constituents: DILG Sec. Año

In his statement of solidarity and faith on Ramadhan addressed to Muslim Filipinos, he cited the DILG Circular No. 2020-061 which enjoins local chief executives to prepare food relief operations that are Halal in Muslim communities.
Under Islam, Muslims are mandated to consume only Halal foods and drinks. Halal means permissible or lawful.
Halal foods are those which are free from filth, blood, alcohol, any parts of swine or any substances that can harm the human body.
“The spirit of sacrifice, faith, obedience, discipline, and charity being observed by our Filipino Muslim brothers and sisters this month is very much in line with what is needed in the current imposition of Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) in high-risk areas as well as the General Community Quarantine (GCQ) in low-risk areas starting May 1, 2020 amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic,” the DILG chief said.
Año said the DILG, together with its attached agencies, especially the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) and the Philippine National Police (PNP), are one with the Muslims in ensuring a peaceful observance of Ramadhan.
He also reminded Muslims that congregational prayers are not allowed to prevent mass gatherings in able to help control the spread of the Covid-19.
The NCMF has issued a memorandum order on March 16 suspending congregational prayers in mosques in the National Capital Region until April 14.
On April 18, it issued another memorandum order reiterating its March 16 memo on suspension of congregational prayers in mosques and prayer rooms while the ECQ is in effect.
“May we continue to tread the path of unity amid diversity through tolerance and coexistence; solidarity amid challenges; and faith in our only one God who will not fail us from our common enemies such as Covid-19,” the DILG secretary said.
