Gensan Madaris teachers undergo capability-building seminar

In a bid to strengthen their capability in providing Muslim youth with Islamic education, 135 Madaris teachers of General Santos City underwent a seminar on classroom instruction management held at Family Country Hotel and Convention Center on Tuesday (July 12).

The activity was spearheaded by the Indigenous Cultural Communities Affairs Division (ICCAD), a unit under the Office of the City Mayor of Gensan which support the implementation of weekend Madaris program.

Two educators, Sheikh Abdulbayan Laguialam, Manager of Madaris Project in Sarangani Province, and Sheikh Abdulmaula Abdurahim, a graduate of King Saud University, handled the lectures.

ICCAD Head Dr. Janena Tito, Executive Assistant to the City Mayor, said the seminar is part of the efforts of the city government to provide the needs of the Muslim constituents of Gensan for non-formal education.

She believes that Madaris education is crucial in nation-building, particularly in moulding the young Muslims to become responsible, values-oriented and God-fearing citizens of the nation.

Madaris students learn Islamic history, the traditions of the Holy Prophet, Islamic values, Islamic jurisprudence and reading and writing in Arabic.

The Asatidz (Madaris teachers) receive monthly honoraria and regular capacity-building training from the city government.

ICCAD helps promote peace and inter-cultural dialogue in the city. It also initiates socio-cultural activities for the Muslims and Indigenous Peoples.

Muslims are estimated at ten per cent of the town’s population. The Maguindanaon and Blaan are the pioneering tribes of the city.
