Malacañan Palace Declares April 10 as Holiday in Observance of Eid’l Fitr

General Santos City (Apri 9, 2024) - In a gesture of solidarity and respect for the religious and cultural significance of Eid’l Fitr, the Malacañan Palace has issued Proclamation Number 514, declaring Wednesday, April 10, 2024, as a regular holiday in celebration of this joyous occasion.
Eid’l Fitr, also known as the Feast of Ramadhan, marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, a period of fasting, prayer, and reflection observed by Muslims worldwide.

The proclamation aims to highlight the importance of Eid’l Fitr in the national consciousness and provide an opportunity for the entire Filipino nation to join their Muslim brothers and sisters in peace and harmony.

The proclamation reads, “Whereas, in order to bring the religious and cultural significance of the Eid’l Fitr to the fore and national consciousness, and to allow the entire Filipino nation to join their Muslim brothers and sisters in peace and harmony in the observance and celebration of Eid’l Fitr, it is necessary to declare Wednesday, 10 April 2024, a regular holiday throughout the country.”

During the month of Ramadan, Filipino Muslims observe fasting from dawn until sunset, refraining from consuming food, drinks, and engaging in sexual activity. This practice is one of the five pillars of Islam, emphasizing discipline, brotherhood, care for the needy, and closeness to the Almighty.

In addition to fasting, Muslim communities engage in various activities to observe Ramadan, such as hosting Islamic symposiums, online lectures, and serving Iftar meals (food to break the fast) to the less fortunate. Charity and acts of kindness are also encouraged during this period, as they hold multiple rewards based on Islamic teachings.

The declaration of April 10 as a holiday underscores the government's commitment to promoting religious tolerance, understanding, and inclusivity, as well as honoring the diversity of beliefs within the Filipino society.

If the crescent moon is sighted on April 9, 2024, it will mark the end of the month of Ramadhan. Muslim Filipinos will pray the Eid’l Fitr congregational prayer on Wednesday April 10.
